Patricia A. Montgomery
My artistic expression was inspired by Kandinsky, Gauguin, Pollock and Rothko. These artistic ancestors’ voices challenged me to produce a spiritual, soulful and rhythmic sound that is present in my paintings, sculptures and quilts.
I started quilting in the early 90’s but it was my acceptances into the Florence, Italy Biennale that my quilts moved from traditional block to contemporary art design. The artist, Faith Ringgold inspired the creation of my “spirit” story quilts which combined the use of digital ghost like images and West African stamp fabric that honored African Americans who lived during Colonial times.
My current art quilt evolves from these artistic ancestor’s voices plus a new voice Susan Shie (Lucky), painter, writer and quilt artist. Her unique use of materials, words and embellishments has encouraged and challenged me to compose a new series of quilted fabric collages. These collages represent movement, texture and colors through the exploration of unconventional quilting materials such as painted canvas, beads, buttons and decorative stitches.
